Basics of Hydrothermal Systems and their Geological Setting

The epigenetic deposits we are discussing are all related to hydrothermal activity. In this section we shall go over the basics of hydrothermal systems (Figure).

The type of hydrothermal system that can produce economic gold and copper deposits is where magmatic intrusions are emplaced high enough in the crust that they induce the convective circulation of groundwater. They may or may not be related to eruptive volcanic activity. These are also the sort of hydrothermal systems that are of most interest for energy extraction, though the set of hydrothermal systems that are useful for geothermal energy extraction is not necessarily identical to those that form economic mineral deposits.
